There"s nothing grammatically wrong through that construction. In fact it"s rather common. It"s an example of a dependent clause. You can use any kind of subordinating conjunctions in this way.

However, I will agree that it sounds a bit odd for other reasons. The advance of the economy speak of the breakthrough almost as if it to be a single event. Personally, I"d compose it prefer this:
