ATOMIC structure 3.3 - plan of Electrons

3.3.1 - The Bohr version of the Atom

Electrons are constantly moving around the nucleus and so possess potential and kinetic energy. However they have the right to only possess specific values the energy, or details energy levels. (Credit must be given to Niels Bohr for proposing this theory.) Click here if you need an illustration the this concept.

According come Bohr"s version of the atom, electrons orbit around the nucleus much like the means planets orbit the sun. Different energy levels are associated with the various orbits. The diagram below shows the Bohr design for fluorine. The cell nucleus of fluorine has 9 protons. Bordering the cell nucleus of fluorine is 9 electrons. The electrons arrange themselves in 3 orbits:

In the an initial orbit, there space 2 electrons. In the second orbit, there are 7 electrons. In the third orbit, there room no electron.

*

Bohr deduced that:

electrons within an atom possess different energies electrons in the very first orbit belong come the very first energy level electron in the 2nd orbit belong come the second energy level electron in the 3rd orbit belong come the 3rd energy level...... And so on ...... each energy level of one atom could only accomodate a certain number of electrons. The maximum number of electrons that deserve to populate a specific energy level is given by the adhering to formula.
*
whereby n = the particular energy level because that example: The maximum number of electron in the very first energy level (n = 1) is 2 (1)2 = 2 electrons The maximum number of electron in the second energy level (n = 2) is 2 (2)2 = 8 electron The maximum number of electron in the 3rd energy level (n = 3) is 2 (3)2 = 18 electron .... And so on ... view if friend can figure out the maximum numbers of electrons in the 4th, 5th, sixth and 7th power level.
